Year-Round Pool Concept

The location of the pool will continue to be at 12th and College in Cañon City.  This is in large part thanks to the help of the City of Cañon City and Cañon City Schools.  The city agreed to vacate the secition of 12th Street between the existing pool and the high school.  The school district is donating land in front of the high school to allow for parking.

Through community outreach during the pool feasiblity study, there was greater public support for replacing the R.C. Icabone Pool with a year-round option.  The cost is estimated at $24.8 million and this factors in inflationary increases for construction.  The cost was determined using comparisons to existing pool construction projects in Colorado.

Community feedback provided the following reasons for selecting this option:

  • A better return on investment (tax dollars) due to 12 months of use vs. 3 months of use
  • The lifespan of the outdoor facility is 30 to 40 years, while the indoor is 50 to 100 years
  • Year-round programming such as swim lessons, open swim, competive swimming, high school swim teams, senior programming, and adult programming
  • The potential for warm water therapy

With this in mind, the consultants have developed a concept for a pool facility that can be used all year round.  Located at the site of the old R.C. Icabone pool, it  has two bodies of water- one indoor and the other outdoor.  Of course modern bath houses and mechancial rooms are included.  This design represents a standard modern pool facility for communities our size.  This would not be considered a water park by today's standards.

Pool Features (to be determined in the design phase):

Outdoor:

  • Water slide
  • Zero Entry
  • Play Features

Indoor

  • Diving Boards
  • Lap lanes
  • Indoor play features (nets, inflatables etc.)
