The Cañon City Area Recreation & Park District

Just a brief history about our organization.

The District is a Colorado Special District established in 1965. The District's main source of funding comes from property taxes collected from within the District's boundaries, an area approximately 115 square miles in size.

The District is governed by a five member Board, whom are elected at large from citizens living or owning property within the District's boundaries. Elections are conducted in May of every odd year.. The board conducts monthly meetings at the District's main office, located at 575 Ash Street. The meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month beginning at 7:00 pm.

The District currently owns and operates several facilities, including Rouse Park, John Griffin Park, Old Harrison School Playground and Park, portions of the Arkansas Riverwalk, The Arkansas Riverwalk Dog Park, the Ash Street Community Garden, the Archery Range, the Ropes Challenge Course, the R.C. Icabone Swimming Pool, Schepp Open Space and Eagle Wing Trailhead and the Community Room, which is located within the main office building. The District co-owns and operates Pathfinder Regional Park with Fremont County.

Every year the Board of Directors and the District Staff strive to improve the programs and facilities offered to the community. The District works in conjunction with the City of Cañon City, Fremont County, Cañon City RE-1 School District, Fremont Sanitation District and many local businesses and non-profits to provide recreational services to the citizens of the community.
